Matthew’s Valentines Edit

Christmas has come and gone, and you’ve been begrudgingly battling your way through that yearly January slump… Cue Valentines Day, which religiously splits the crowd 1/2 way every year. Love it or hate it, we asked Matthew to come up with some ideas to make your Valentines (or Galentines!) special this year.

Situated in the centre of London’s Covent Garden, The Petersham is a place of calm away from the hustle and bustle of the City. Designed to draw inspiration from the family home, the interiors of the restaurant are understated and elegant, and are filled with stunning floral displays and the best of contemporary art. Focussing on seasonal produce, Petersham’s delicious Italian dishes feature some mouth-watering plates such as Venison carpaccio & King scallop crudo with blood orange and dill.

It’s safe to say that at Matthew Calvin we’re a little bit obsessed with all things botanical. Botanique Workshop is one of our favourite companies to order from – their unique floral arrangements are stunning, and very reasonably priced at around £39 a bouquet. They also have a few different shops, so if you’d prefer to go and visit them in person find your nearest shop. Their Clerkenwell shop by Exmouth Market is just down the road from us in Farringdon, so if you’re there, pop by the studio and say hi!

Want to organise an experience for you & your loved one to do together? Instead of just going for the obvious dinner and drinks, opt for something different this year. The Allotment Florist offers stunning bouquets, and the chance to learn how to make them yourselves. Their Hand Tied Bouquet Workshop costs £60, and you’ll be provided with a beautiful selection of seasonal blooms as well as all other materials to create your own stunning bouquet to take home. You’ll go away with your very own masterpiece, and the knowledge and confidence to make your own beautiful bouquets at home in the future!

One of our favourite places to go for brunch, Farmacy’s mouth-watering Breakfast menu is very different to those you may be used to. A selection of plant-based dishes supporting both Vegan and Vegetarian diets, Farmacy’s menu is creative and exciting – even the meat-eaters in our team struggled to notice the lack of meat / dairy. Featuring dishes such as their Protein ‘Omelette’, a chickpea pancake filled with roasted butternut squash, avo, greens & harissa, and the Farmacy Breakfast, a potato ‘rosti’ with truffle cream, tomatoes, and greens, Farmacy proves that even to meat-eaters, the Vegan experience can be a wonderful one!

Voted the world’s most romantic restaurant, Clos Maggiore is a Valentines no brainer. A modern French restaurant, Clos Maggiore’s flower-filled conservatory in Covent Garden is offering a five course Valentines menu with a glass of champagne on arrival. At £175, it’s a bit pricier than our other options, but such a treat. Featuring dishes such as Cheek of Spanish Black Pig Cooked in Rioja Wine, Smoked Burrata & Heirloom Beetroot and Slow Braised Short Rib of Black Angus Beef & Toasted Hazelnuts, we can understand why Clos Maggiore is such a popular place to go for those special occasions.

“It was actually on Valentines Day that I plucked up the courage to ask my fiancé, Joe, out. Even after we tie the knot later this year and our anniversary changes, Valentines Day will always be a special one.”

If you’re in need of some gift inspiration, head over to our Valentines Wishlist, where we asked the team what they’re hoping for this year. Of course, we always favour jewellery… but there are some other great bits in there too. See some of our favourite jewellery picks below.
