Meet Narell, our pop-up shop co-ordinator

Narell originally joined the Matthew Calvin team 4 years ago when she moved to London from Amsterdam, and has recently rejoined to assist with pop-ups and silversmithing. If you visited our Old Street pop-up in November last year, the chances are that it was Narell’s brilliant smile greeting you as you walked through the door, and over the years she also helped create many of the designs you know and love today. A qualified gemologist, this year Narell is also talking us through the potential addition of adding stones to some of our most loved designs as well as planning and managing many more pop-up shops!

What’s your go-to meal for a cozy night in?

I love a good soup, I could eat it all day everyday. I always aim to make a small pot of soup and end up with two litres so, I don’t know how I do it! So I usually cover quite a few days of the week with that.

What’s your earliest jewellery memory?

There are two memories that are probably from around the same time. One is the horrendous memory of getting my ears pierced, I was four years old and my parents had to take me to the jeweller four times before we succeeded. I was convinced they were shooting at me with a pistol, that is also what I remembered for many years after the event until I realised as a teenager it’s actually a tiny piercing gun. The second memory is when I discovered why mothers earring collection, it included the most crazy 80’s earrings. I mean who doesn’t want earrings that are bright painted wooden parrots?!

What’s your favourite local hidden gem?

EspressoBase in Bloomsbury, tucked away in St. George’s churchyard with a beautiful green garden and cute wooden furniture. Gennaro serves Amalfi style coffee. It is rich, deep and very smooth and actually the best coffee in London. There is no coffee I enjoy more than his, there is no competition. He taught me to love coffee without cow’s milk and he charges for sugar as it ruins the coffee. I love having a chat with Gennaro, sarcasm connected us. If I have a bad day I always walk away with a little giggle and smile.

Go to trashy movie?

Anything dripping of tacky, cheesy romanticism. Think Julia Roberts, Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Ryan Gosling.

I couldn’t possibly start the day without…?

Room temperature lemon water and celery juice! It doesn’t always taste great but it keeps me healthy.

“I love jewellery that has a good weight to it and a good polish, to me that just breathes quality and makes my heart flutter!”

Top 4 Matthew Calvin picks and why?

1 – Meteorite Textured Round Studs.

They just make me smile. I think they are just so cute I almost want to eat them!

2 – Double Meteorite Bangle.

I love the beautiful polished surface of it, the weight and how well I can wear it on it’s own and stacked with other bracelets. I have had mine for over three years now.

3 – Double Thin Meteorite Textured Hoops.

I love the almost crescent like shape. It is so elegant yet eye-catching!

4 – Engravable Large Circle Necklace.

I love jewellery that has a good weight to it and that in combination with a good polished finish just makes my heart beat faster. Also this length makes it easy to wear with a turtle neck jumper as well as a nice summer outfit, perfect!

This year, Narell is working a lot more closely with the team by running a series of Matthew Calvin pop-ups. If you fancy popping in and saying hi, sign up to our mailing list to be the first to know about all things Matthew Calvin. We love having you with us.
