We love what we do, because we meet so many wonderful independent business owners who are just as passionate about jewellery and style as we are. We often have visits from Rachel, owner of The Wearer – an independent jewellery boutique buried in the heart of Angel. The Wearer has stocked Matthew Calvin Jewellery since the beginning of 2016, and quickly became a favourite of ours! We’re huge fans of the shop and have even hosted a Christmas pop up there (complete with prosecco and mince pies, of course).
Rachel’s mission is to provide Londoners with the best of the best in contemporary jewellery – “jewellery with personality”; and we think she’s hit the nail on the head. Not only does she stock a wonderful collection of Matthew Calvin pieces, but she stocks many other brands that we love too.
Her shop is beautifully laid out and the hand picked selection of jewellery she has on display will catch any magpie’s eye. When you’ve finished marvelling over precious metals you can explore the magical warren of streets which house The Wearer and countless other treasured shops. This week, we’ve asked Rachel all the questions you could possibly want to know about running your own jewellery shop.
MC: How would you sum up The Wearer in 3 words?
R: Tiny but diverse.
MC: How does a typical day for you usually start?
R: I wake up ridiculously early, around 5am, neck some strong coffee and go on a good long run to clear my head. I normally have a load of errands to run before we open the shop but I also try and get a bit of time in to do something for myself. I’m trying to teach myself French (its a slow process!). Quite often I’m seeing designers to pick up stock or see new collections from them. It’s one of the best things about working with London designers.
MC: 3 other must-visits in your area?
R: There are some fantastic independent boutiques on Camden Passage. It’s a great community to be part of. My favourite neighbours are :
The Pantry Underwear – no-one is more enthusiastic about your undergarments than Elly the owner! They were signed up as the Liberty underwear concession early this year too so thats the seal of approval for stylish knickers in my book!
In Residence – unique homeware and lifestyle store owned and run by the super stylish Jackie. My dream home would be filled with her curated pieces.
Victoria Beau – great basics, a fantastic range of Rixo dresses to drool over and Dinky, the cutest Sausage Dog.
MC: What do you look for in a designer that you’d like to stock?
R: It totally depends. I tend to look at the selection as a whole and fill in the gaps where we’re missing trends. Its a tiny store but I try and offer a diverse selection thats going to appeal to as many of my customers as possible. The one thing that they all have in common is that they’re all London based so that helps narrow things down a bit. There are so many amazing designers in London its difficult to decide sometimes.
MC: What is usually playing through the speakers in the shop?
R: Like my taste in jewellery my music tastes are quite eclectic. It depends on the day and the mood but the new albums from Jungle and Christine & The Queens are getting a lot of air time.
MC: What’s your favourite local brunch place and must-have dish?
R: I’m a big fan of Oldroyd. They are a fabulous neighbourhood restaurant that produce delicious, seasonal food in a cosy space, and handy that they’re my neighbours. They make the BEST croquetas with truffle mayo. I’m getting hungry as we speak….
MC: What do you like to do to unwind after a day at the shop?
R: I usually catch up with my house mate (who also happens to own and run two fabulous independent cookshops), knock up a bit of food and I’m generally out like a light by 9.30am. I blame the 5am wake up!
But if I do need to let my hair down a bit I go to my favourite local; The Compton Arms. The best beer, bar food and hospitality this side of anywhere.
MC: What’s one thing that you’d like to accomplish in 2019?
R: I’d love to broaden the offer to fine jewellery and a mens collection but the current space just isn’t enough to house it all. A second store?! Watch this space!
MC: What are your favourite 5 Matthew Calvin pieces?
R: Dipped Wire Studs are our number one best seller in store – customers love the simplicity and the mixed metal.
Joint Rings for the versatility. Its always easy to upsell these because they look so great stacked.
Any of the studs! They are so easy to grab as a little gift for someone and the stylish glass packaging makes them even more special.
The next time you’re in the area, be sure to drop in and say hi to Rachel. Trust us, with such a broad range of designers and styles, you won’t regret it!
