A while ago we asked our Insta community what burning questions they’d like to ask our founder Matthew. Matthew has answered the most popular questions below.

If your question hasn’t been answered, please do get in touch with us at info@matthewcalvin.com and a lovely member of our team will do their best to help!

How do I know what ring size I am?

You can measure your own ring size easily at home, just cut a strip of paper and wrap it around your finger. Mark where the strip meets itself, and measure to the nearest millimetre using a ruler. See our size guide for more information.

Ring sizes are always tricky ones to get right, so if you'd prefer to be extra certain that your new ring will fit perfectly, you can order a Matthew Calvin ring sizer to be delivered to your door. These cost £5 to purchase, however we'd be happy to refund the £5 cost once you've placed the order for your ring.

I’d like to start layering necklaces but don’t know where to start!

When layering necklaces, balance is key. I always suggest starting with a 'feature' piece - something bold like the Antigua Necklace or the Doru Tapered Necklace. Once you've chosen which piece you'd like to pull focus to, you can then start working with different chain types, colours and lengths to build your stack. I love styling statement necklaces with shorter, daintier styles like the Dot Necklace or Celeste Diamond Necklace.

Can I wear my jewellery when showering?

As a general rule, it's always best to remove your jewellery before showering, swimming, or washing your hands. Water and chemicals found in soaps can cause damage to jewellery over time - especially styles that include gemstones, or gold vermeil pieces. Showering whilst wearing your jewellery will also reduce its shine, so get in the habit of removing it before showering to keep your jewellery looking its best.

How to make mixed metals look cool?

I love mixing metals - in our very first collection we introduced a selection of mixed metal necklaces and I've loved it ever since. It's such a nice way to add another dimension to your jewellery styling, especially if you're not one to layer your jewellery. If you're not sure where to start, I'd choose your main colour - for me that's silver, and add a few simple gold pieces in to the mix.

What’s your favourite design?

I'll be honest... my favourite design tends to change every time we release a new collection! I have a couple at the moment.

The Small Meteorite Bar Earrings are a long-standing favourite - I love how simple and easy to wear they are, and the Meteorite texturing catches the light so perfectly.

The Doru Textured Huggy Hoops are a more recent favourite. The shape and size of these is different to any designs we have introduced before, and I love that they make a statement without being overly large or heavy on the ears.

What to do with jewellery that’s tarnished over time?

It's always best to clean your jewellery regularly to avoid natural tarnishing - storage is also key! (Visit our Jewellery Care Guide to find out how we recommend to store / care for your jewellery.)

If your jewellery has tarnished or lost its shine, silver jewellery can be brought back to life using a silver polishing cloth. Gold / Rose Gold jewellery should be cleaned gently to avoid damaging the surface treatment, using a soft, lint free cloth.
